Cross Flow Heat Exchanger Air Handling Unit

Cross Flow Heat Exchanger Air Handling Unit

The cross-flow heat exchangers are ideal for all applications where thermal energy exchange or recovery is either possible or desirable. These exchangers exchange thermal energy from exhaust of conditioned space to fresh air stream and pre-conditions the fresh air. Two air streams cross each other without getting in contact each other and exchanges energy.

Working principle of Cross Flow Heat Exchanger

Cross flow heat exchanges are made of thin metal panels, normally aluminium as a metal is used. The thermal energy is exchanged via these panels. Cross flow heat exchangers have square cross section and has thermal efficiencies of 40-65%. A counter flow or dual cross flow heat exchangers can be used for higher thermal efficiencies required and can have 75-85% efficiency. The two air streams i.e. exhaust and fresh air flows through channels formed between the plates. Each air stream flows in alternating channels i.e. supply air in one channel and return air in the next channel. Sensible energy from the warm air flowing through one side of the exchanger, is transferred to the cold air flowing through the other.

The two air streams do not mix with each other hence there is no risk of short circuiting or cross contamination. The mixing of dirt, odours, moisture, bacteria does not take place and only heat it transmitted from exhaust air to fresh air by conduction as result of temperature difference between to air streams.

These are less expensive then any other types of energy recovery devices available.
